Girls, games, and advertising

There's a brief interview/article with a female game developer over at the BBC new site. The article presents two frequently raised issues with regard to girls and gaming: the gamer stereotype of a geeky male and advertising targetting almost exclusively the male 18-35 demographic. By chance I just ran across a UK tv ad for Playstation2 (available in Windows Media and QuickTime), that shows a girl thoroughly enjoying World Rally Championship 3, but is very obviously targetted at male players. Still, I can't seem to make up my mind if it's not a good thing that this ad is showing a girl having fun with a videogame after all. Have a look and let me know what you think...

Oh dear, this one's *very much* (straight) male oriented with not a hint of subtlety... *sigh*
What can I say? I cannot imagine anyone considering this representing a female breakthrough into a considered-to-be-male-oriented area.Posted by Arjan on November 13, 2003 @ 15:25

Since MT-Blacklist inexplicably stopped working I had no other recourse than close comments and trackbacks to stop the spam. I've been meaning to correct this for quite a while, but life got in the way... in a good way I should add.
