Photo gallery software
There's a little thread on the WordPress forums about different photo gallery scripts. Quite useful, so for future reference a bunch of PHP (and MySQL) based gallery scripts:
- Gallery
- The best known open source package, lots of features, many tutorials and howtos around the web
- Coppermine
- Open source, lots of features, not quite valid html output
- PhpWebGallery
- Open source, not quite as slick, but has potential
- Photostack
- Creative commons licensed, quite nifty script, but relies on FTP and separate textfiles in the image directories for image details and descriptions, which isn't quite as userfriendly as an integrated solution
- 4images
- Not open source, but free for personal use; php/mysql based, quite some features
- Pictorialis
- Special version of WordPress hacked to especially support a photolog.
- iPAP
- Not quite released yet, but a nice looking solution as illustrated by several sites

Japanese lessons
Preparing for our holiday in Japan I took some Japanese conversation classes. Liz does too. It's fun and Japan's a fascinating place, but it's not the easiest language for a gaijin to learn. Liz points to a very helpful online Japanese character flashcard tool, while a commenter points out a similar online character tool. Cool :-)
